The Vita is special too, cries Sony

PS Vita Image

Poor PlayStation Vita, released worldwide just a few months ago and people are already willing to write it off as a failure. With the Wii U coming out and tablets dominating the mobile gaming scene, it's easy to project doom and gloom reports for Vita. One person not ready to throw in the towel is Sony's Scott Rohde who actually believes the Vita's connectivity with the PlayStation 3 offers a better solution to multi-screen gaming than any other console on or coming to the market - including the Wii U.

I know, Nintendo has prided itself on the Wii U GamePad, the system's tablet controller that looks to provide an entirely new way gamers interact with the game and each other. But that doesn't mean the Vita can't do equally special things - even better than the Wii U - argues Rohde.

"Because we have the Vita, I think we can do a lot of special things," the Worldwide Studios vice president told GamesIndustry.

“And remember, that Wii U tablet doesn’t have a processor in it, so it’s got to be fueled by that box sitting under your TV," he added. “We can do some pretty special things that you’ll start to see on the floor this year and you’ll see more over the upcoming months about what you can do when you actually have a processor in the thing that’s in your hand as well.”

The big emphasis was on the Vita's cross-platform compatibility with the PlayStation 3. Not only can you take your gaming experience on-the-go, away from the console, but you can even cross-play.

“When you start to see how you can cross over between the two platforms – look at two of the titles that are here at E3, PlayStation All-Stars and Sly 4, for example,” he said.  “Both available on Vita and PS3, and there’s some sort of interactivity across the board. Developers are interested in that kind of stuff.”

Latest reports, as of May, put the Vita at 1.8 million unit sold worldwide.

Sony aiming to sell 10 million PlayStation Vitas

Despite the current sales of the PlayStation Vita, Sony plans on selling 10 million units by March of 2013 says SCE CEO Andrew House in an interview with Rueters at E3.“The end-of-year holiday season is extremely important for handheld game consoles,” said House explaining how they would reach the sale of 10 million units.

The top titles being released for the PS Vita are Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation and Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified. As for any other titles that Sony is banking on to get them to 10 million by the end of the year fiscal year, we haven't really seen much. The E3 press conference spent little time on the Vita, focusing more on the PlayStation 3 titles like Beyond: Two Souls and The Last of Us. Although, House did say that they were going to 'strengthen' the online services of the Vita by adding Youtube and Hulu apps. In conjunction with the Holiday sales Sony believes that the release of the new white PS Vita model will help raise the sales.

Unfortunately, when asked about the next generation of the PlayStation House wouldn't budge.

True nightmares are yours to write in Silent Hill: Book of Memories

Konami has publicized an E3 trailer for Silent Hill: Book of Memories, coming to PlayStation Vita this fall.

"You discover that by altering what's written," the trailer's description reads, "you can actually change the past. You can write your own ideal history."

Although the publisher previously told Game Informer that they were aiming for an October release, the video plays it safe and does not confirm an exact date.

Book of Memories has been delayed before, and then again after the unpopular Silent Hill HD Collection released with a slew of problems.

What do you think of the video? Is it what you'd expect from a Silent Hill title, and do you like this approach?

Assassin's Creed III bundles headed to PS3 and Vita this fall

Sony plans to release both a PlayStation 3 bundle with Assassin's Creed III and a PlayStation Vita pack with the recently announced Assassin's Creed III: Liberation on October 30.

The Vita bundle will include a "crystal white" version of the handheld (Wi-fi only, not 3G), the game disc for Liberation, and a 4GB memory card. For PS3, the box will contain a 320GB console and one controller, a copy of Assassin's Creed III, and unspecified exclusive DLC.

“When you link [the games], you will unlock Connor’s tomahawk, an exclusive character skin, a multiplayer character, and a complete upgrade of ammunition pouches,” said Jack Tretton, SCEA’s chief executive.

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation takes place in 18th-century Louisiana and stars Aveline, the first-ever female assassin in the series. She must confront the Spanish forces that threaten to invade while the rest of the coastal colonies are battling in the American Revolution. Aveline descends from African and French lineage and uses weapons such as a machete, poison-dart blowpipe, and dueling pistols.

Take a look at the gameplay trailer for Assassin's Creed III above, or peek at the video for Liberation below.
